About JIOL

The Journal of Interactive Online Learning focuses on providing a venue for manuscripts, critical essays, and reviews that encompass disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives in regards to issues related to higher-level learning outcomes.

The Journal of Interactive Online Learning is an online publication of the Virtual Center for Online Learning Research, and a joint effort of The University of Alabama, The University of Idaho, Miami University, and the University of Texas at Tyler.

This journal of theory, research, and practice in interactive online learning serving all disciplines aims to:

  • Provide a forum for the dissemination of research on interactive online education
  • Disseminate ideas that enhance the practical aspects of interactive online education
  • Further knowledge and understanding of emerging innovations in online education
  • Foster debate about the use and application of online education

JIOL Notes and Accomplishments

As of May 2006, JIOL has an 18% acceptance rate making this appealing to those accepted authors.

The journal’s listing will be included in the 1st Edition of Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Educational Technology and Library Science.

Flight Instructor has reprinted the manuscript The Development of Socialization in an On-line Learning Environment (Jones & Peachey, Winter 2005) on its website, www.instructor.aviation.ca. The journal receives similar requests often, including permission to include links to specific works.

The journal has had over 70 leaders in education conduct reviews of article submissions. Many are journal editors themselves, in addition to being highly regarded in their disciplines.

The journal is asked periodically to review new book releases that pertain to online learning.

JIOL has consistently managed to receive, send out for review, report status, and conduct final revisions for each submitting author(s) in fewer than three months. This was the journal’s goal when the first edition went on-line in summer 2002 and remains the goal today.

JIOL had an entry in 2005’s AERA "Best Education Research Article in an Open Access Journal" for the Communication of Research SIG. Heuer & King's (Summer, 2004) Leading the Band: The Role of the Instructor in Online Learning for Educators was the journal’s nomination.

JIOL is also listed on AERA’s Open Access Journal list.

JIOL is a listed, recommended journal on www.knowledgeboard.com.

Journal is accessed in Elsevier's Bibliographic Databases.

JIOL is listed in the Social Science Information Gateway (SOSIG).
